Blueberries love stories so we have been using different approaches to help us understand texts even better. We used different pictures from the story ‘The Lonely Beast’ to make predictions about what would happen, then used Colourful Semantics to help develop our vocabulary and understanding of characters and events.
Here is Blueberries Autumn 1 topic map giving an overview of what we are covering this half term:
Blueberries have been up to some fantastic things whilst being at home. Learning, housework, cooking, bike rides to name a few! Well done Blueberries.
Blueberries had a fantastic day for World Book Day dressed up as some of our favourite characters.
It was lovely to go to Oranges and share some books with our friends.
We all enjoyed choosing a new book to take home from The Fellgate Book Swap.
As part of our Amazing America topic Blueberries and Plums visited the Ice Bar in Newcastle to see lots of New York themed sculptures. There was iconic statues, sports teams and famous shops! A very cold morning but we all warmed up with a hot chocolate afterwards.
On Friday 24th January Blueberries went on a visit to The Word in South Shields to visit the space exhibition. We had lots of fun learning all about the planets, what it is like to live in space and old and new films about space!
Here we are being astronauts!
Children in Blueberries and Plums had a fantastic opportunity to work with an artist at The Baltic and create their own exhibition. Over 3 sessions the children used skills such as moulding, paper mache, using cocktail sticks and shredded paper to create fur and using a hole punch to create scales, as well as many other techniques.
We all enjoyed attending the grand opening and seeing the artwork on the wall! Thank you to all parents and carers who joined us.
The exhibition is fantastic and is available to visit on level 2 of The Baltic until January.
This half term we have been learning all about dinosaurs. We came into school to find a dinosaur nest and large footprints in our classroom! We had to write a letter to the National History Museum to discover what dinosaur was in our school. They replied with the shocking news that 5 species of dinosaurs were roaming around Fellgate!
In DT we made poppy cupcakes for Remembrance Day. We had to roll, cut and shape icing to place on top of a cake. We also practised our measuring skills and made Christmas tree decorations using lolly sticks.
In Science we have been learning about the fossilisation process. We sequenced and described how dinosaur fossils were made. We went on a visit to Winter Gardens to look at some real fossils, bones and teeth. We then made dinosaur headbands and went on a dinosaur trail around the gardens.
Some children attended Temple Park for an athletics competition where we used lots of skills we have been learning in our PE lessons with coach Adam. Such as a variety jumping, aiming and throwing.
In Music we have been learning to play Jingle Bells and We Wish You a Merry Christmas on the keyboard. We followed sheet music and played the correct keys. We also had lots of fun learning our Christmas nativity songs and performed Santa’s Hat in front of all our parents and carers.
In RE we have been learning all about Christianity and why light is important at Christmas. To help us we made Christingles and described what each element stood for.
Just some of our learning! Another busy and fun filled half term!
We have had a great start to the year in Blueberries. Our topic was ‘Tales With a Twist’. We have read some fun stories in Literacy such as The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, Prince Cinders and Princess Smartypants. We retold them and even wrote our own version of a twisted tale.
In Maths we have been learning about right angles, acute angles and obtuse angles, clockwise and anti-clockwise and have been interpreting data from pictograms, tally charts and bar charts.
We have learned lots of painting skills in art, such as mixing with white and black, using happy and sad colours and creating work in the style of Pablo Picasso. We also had a fantastic opportunity to attend three sessions at The Baltic for an art workshop to create an exhibition. Check out our amazing animals!
In History we have been learning all about Queen Victoria. We used a variety of sources to research information and create our own fact files. Did you know her first name wasn’t even Victoria? It was Alexandrina.
In ICT we have been working on our word processing skills using Microsoft Word. We can type using correct punctuation, save our work and then retrieve it to edit at a later date.
A very busy half term full of lots of learning!
Throughout May we have enjoyed reading ‘Tiddler’ by Julia Donaldson – we retold the story verbally and written, we discussed the characters feelings based on their facial expressions and we created our own version of a Tiddler story using lots of fantastic openers, adjectives and verbs!
In History and Geography we have been exploring prehistoric animals and some of the children really impressed the teachers with their prehistoric knowledge. We also looked at the 7 continents and the different animals that live in each.
We enjoyed a visit to Jesmond Dene to see the animals at Pets Corner and we all enjoyed playing lots of games and exploring in the forests and river.
Lots of our time in Blue Group has been spent working very hard practising for Fellgate’s Got Talent, with ‘FABBA’ getting through to the final. All of the staff are very proud of the children for their hard work and commitment to learning their routine and performing as well as children showing their support for their friends!
